Concert Music
Concert music works form an important part in Francis Shaw’s music. Three Concertos (for Piano, Viola and Harpsichord), 2 Operas ‘The Selfish Giant’ ( based on Oscar Wilde’s story, libretto by Michael Ffinch and winner of the Caerphilly International Opera competition) and ‘The Tin Knight’ (libretto by Michael Ffinch). Both operas have been produced in the UK and Germany.
His cantata ‘Aspects of Summer’ for choir, mezzo soprano (Felicity Palmer) and orchestra (London Festival Orchestra) was performed in 6 English cathedrals and televised for the Arts Channel in 1986.
His first Piano Concerto was premiered by Martin Jones and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with the composer conducting in 1988. He has also composed much ensemble music, songs and music for children. In 2000 the choir of St. George’s Chapel Choir, Windsor recorded for CD some of his choral music under the title ‘Bright Phoenix’ (Mall Records, distributed by Priory Records).
