“Francis is presently composing a number of orchestral pieces for the KPM (EMI) Production Music Library illustrating some major events in 20th. century Russian history. These he will record in Moscow with the Moscow Film Music Orchestra in the Spring of 2007.”
New Commissions
- Moviola Films, Sweden have commissioned Francis to compose the score for a major new drama for Swedish TV4, ‘Birds of a Feather’, based on a detective novel by Anna Janssons concerning an outbreak of Avian ‘Flu on the island of Gotland. Directed by Erik Leijonborg, this 4 part series will be broadcast in Scandinavia and Germany in the Spring 2008.
- A new Fanfare for 4 trumpets of the Minden Band of the Queen’s Division to celebrate the opening of the new Museum of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment in Leicester on November 13th. 2007.
- In mid-November 2007 Francis will record his new series of large orchestral works in Moscow for KPM Musichouse (EMI). This music illustrates some major events and situations in 20th century Russia and is, broadly speaking, in the musical styles of Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Stravinsky, with a heavy emphasis on the Russian folk music tradition.
- The new Kings Place development at Kings Cross, London will provide rehearsal and performing space for a number of music groups including the London Sinfonietta. Tangent Films have made a series of short information video films recording the building development and participation of the local community, particularly children from schools in the locality. Music for these films is by Francis Shaw.
- The Bahamas International Film Festival has invited Francis to take part in seminars and as a panelist in early December 2007. He will also direct film music workshops with young Bahamian composers there during his visit.
Awards
Francis's music for the Oscar nominated Swedish film "EVIL" won the coveted Ivor Novello Award
for the Best Film Score at the 51st Ivors ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel on May 25th.
Unusually, the jury was unanimous in its decision.
The other nominated film scores were 'Pride & Prejudice' (Dario Marianelli) and 'The Chronicles of Narnia' (Harry Gregson-Williams).
